About the Artist
Full name: Deborah Cyprian Artist name: Deby
Deborah Cyprian is a self-taught visual artist based in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Working
primarily in oil paint, she builds layered, intuitive compositions that explore identity as a lived and unfolding process. Her practice centers on themes of faith, spirituality, memory, and the quiet beauty found in pain, often using flowers as symbols of fragility, persistence, and life.…
Cyprian holds a B.Sc. in Political Science from Landmark University and is currently pursuing a Masterβs degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy. Though formally trained outside
the arts, she approaches painting with the same depth of inquiry, allowing each work to
emerge through a balance of planning and responsive making.
Cyprian is currently developing a painting series examining identity as process, seeking spaces that allow for focused research, dialogue, and growth.
Artist statement: I work in oil paint, building images slowly through layered, intuitive processes. My
work explores identity as something lived and unfolding, not fixed. Central to my practice
are themes of faith, memory, and the quiet beauty found in pain. Flowers often appear as
symbols of fragility.
