Àsàbí reflects my exploration of Yoruba cultural heritage and the significance of tradition in shaping identity. As part of my Oríkì Series, this work examines names as vessels of memory and belonging. The title, Àsàbí, refers to one who embodies culture, carrying ancestral knowledge and history. Drawing inspiration from Fiditi, Oyo State, known as the “home of Fruits,” the fruit adornments symbolize nourishment and continuity, while the Abàjà tribal marks signify lineage and cultural memory. This textile-inspired piece invites reflection on the interplay of identity and heritage.
Àsàbí was inspired by the desire to preserve and celebrate cultural identity in a rapidly changing world. Rooted in Yoruba heritage and the cultural history of Fiditi, the work reflects the belief that our traditions, stories, and values remain an essential part of who we are. The title, meaning “One Who Embodies Culture,” serves as a reminder that culture is not merely inherited—it is lived, carried, and expressed through everyday life.
This piece was motivated by a reflection on ancestry, belonging, and the importance of staying connected to one's roots. Through symbols such as the Abàjà tribal marks, fruit adornments, and traditional motifs, Àsàbí encourages viewers to embrace their heritage with pride and recognize the strength found in cultural memory. It is a celebration of identity and a reminder that understanding where we come from helps shape where we are going.
