Ẹwàtómí draws inspiration from Yoruba naming traditions, where names embody emotional and philosophical significance, and the concept of self-acceptance as a form of inner beauty. As part of my Oríkì Series, this work explores names as vessels of identity and lived experience. It conveys the understanding that beauty is inherent and sufficient, not something to be endlessly sought. The figure’s closed eyes and composed gesture indicate an inward retreat, affirming self-worth independent of external validation. I selected acrylic for its layering and tonal control.
In a world where people are constantly pressured to compare themselves with others and seek validation from external sources, Ẹwàtómí was created as a reminder that true beauty begins with self-acceptance. Inspired by the Yoruba name meaning “Beauty Is Enough for Me,” the work reflects a journey toward contentment and the realization that worth is not determined by societal standards, possessions, or approval from others.
The piece encourages viewers to pause, look inward, and appreciate themselves as they are. It speaks to those who have ever doubted their value, reminding them that beauty is not something to endlessly pursue but something that already exists within. Through Ẹwàtómí, I hope to inspire a sense of peace, confidence, and gratitude for one's unique identity, embracing the belief that being enough begins with recognizing the beauty already present within us.
