Tíwa - Lẹwà (Ours is Beautiful) This portrait is a meditation on the architecture of stillness. Rooted in the Yoruba philosophy of Tíwa - Lẹwà, the piece is a reclamation of identity and self-recognition. The subject is crowned in a Gèlè (head tie) made from Aṣọ-òkè, a fabric woven with history, dignity, and the weight of belonging. The monarch butterflies here symbolize alignment; they represents a gentle connection to one’s authentic self. Their presence near her face and upon her shoulder reflects a mind at peace and a body grounded in its own truth.
This piece is inspired by Yoruba traditional culture, with a particular focus on contemporary expressions of this heritage. I explore the rich narratives, symbols, and aesthetics inherent in Yoruba traditions, aiming to bridge the past with the present. Through my art, I seek to reflect the complexities of identity, community, and cultural continuity. I utilize various materials and techniques to convey these themes, creating pieces that resonate with both personal and collective experiences. My goal is to engage viewers in a dialogue about the significance of cultural roots in shaping contemporary life.
