Ada explores the cultural significance of the female child within Igbo society and reflects on the enduring role of women as custodians of identity, continuity, and community. At the center of the composition is an abstract depiction of a calm woman adorned with traditional hair knots and a spiral earring symbolizing life, growth, and the cyclical nature of existence. Her presence serves as a reminder of the vital place women occupy within the social, cultural, and spiritual fabric of society.
Ada is a personal reflection of cultural norms and ties that are associated with the female child and woman in the Igbo culture. I have witnessed the beauty, strength and expectations that comes with being an Igbo daughter and not just any type of daughter but the first daughter of my parents.
Surrounding the figure are symbolic motifs that reference fertility, matriarchy, procreation, kinship, marriage, love, and family ties. These elements draw inspiration from indigenous visual languages and cultural symbols that communicate values passed from one generation to the next. Together, they create a layered narrative that speaks to both personal and collective experiences of womanhood.
Rather than relying on conventional representations of Igbo culture, the work employs a contemporary visual language and an expressive palette of purple, yellow, white, black, and subtle accents of red. Through this approach, Ada seeks to celebrate the Igbo woman not only as a cultural figure, but as a symbol of resilience, creation, wisdom, and belonging. The work invites viewers to reflect on the profound ways women shape families, preserve traditions, and contribute to the continuity of society across generations.
