Home" is a cinematic, 5-panel visual narrative bridging fine art photography and typography. Manually assembled within a black frame and mat, the polyptych features 4 duotone photographs anchored by a dedicated text panel. It explores the fluid threshold of memory and the spaces we inhabit. The striking green and white palette is a deliberate homage to the Nigerian flag, grounding the piece in a profound dialogue about origin and belonging.
Home is a narrative born from the emotional complex of immigration. Moving from Nigeria to Canada, I found myself constantly navigating the space between physical geography and deeply rooted memory. The inspiration for this piece struck during a moment of reflection on what actually constructs a 'home'. Realizing it is less about a physical structure and more about dynamic thresholds of feeling, relationship, and the spaces we move through.
At its emotional core is the handwritten note from my mother, a grounding anchor of comfort and joy. This intimate message starkly contrasts with the broader, somewhat disorienting landscapes and interiors, emphasizing the duality of my journey. I felt a profound need to visually reconcile the displacement of living across borders with the warmth of familial love.
My process balanced intention with spontaneity. I captured these environments using digital photography, seeking frames that spoke to both constant motion and stillness. I then digitally processed the images into high-contrast duotones. The subtly laced green and white hues are a direct, reverent reference to the Nigerian flag, embedding my country of origin into the pixels of my current reality.
By manually assembling these separate visual fragments and text into a unified polyptych, I constructed a deliberate narrative. It is a piece that witnesses the reality of built environments while honoring the lived experience that truly makes a space a home.
