The dust and light are not just environmental elements; they actively shape the painting. Warm, earthy tones rise through the surface, echoing heat, soil, and movement. Light filters across broken planes of colour, softening edges and dissolving forms. These conditions inform the palette and the spontaneous application of paint, creating a surface that feels lived in rather than staged. The rider and horse emerge through rich impasto and expressive abstraction. Thick palette-knife strokes suggest motion, weight, and rhythm and the lack of facial detail allows the figure to remain universal.
My interest in equestrian subjects comes from long-term observation and admiration. Growing up, I watched Western cowboy movies, thereby, relished any opportunity to encounter horse riders real life. It is quite common to see men and boys often riding horses owned by guardians or employers, probably guiding them to pasture, walking them or galloping through open areas, or riding simply for enjoyment. These scenes stayed with me because they felt natural and honest. There was no performance, only movement, care, and familiarity. Over time, I realised these quiet moments were rarely represented, despite how deeply they shape identity and memory.
This painting is driven by a desire to preserve those impressions. I wanted the Impasto and spontaneous strokes to give this painting physical energy and emotional immediacy and to create a feeling of the intensity of thought, movement, and lived experience rather than just seeing an image.
By allowing the background light and dust to influence the palette and texture, the painting becomes as much about place as it is about subject, a timeless reflection on culture, memory, and everyday beauty.
