Iri Agha captures a flashpoint of raw, ancestral energy through the lens of the Ohafia War Dance. This large-scale 30 by 40 inch acrylic work juxtaposes a familiar community setting with the primal, kinetic force of a people's legendary bravery. The composition is anchored by a foregrounded warrior whose muscular physique and ceremonial Okpu Agu (Leopard Cap) symbolize discipline and high status. By framing the dancers mid-stride on a contemporary road, the piece explores the tension between modern life and the enduring, fierce pride of inherited identity.
My motivation for painting Iri Agha was to create a visual testament to the unfiltered pride and unified heritage of my people. This work is an invitation to witness a living tradition—the Ohafia War Dance—as it breathes life into the modern world.
I wanted to honour the legendary bravery of the Ohafia people by capturing a moment in mid-stride, where the movement is both celebratory and heavy with historic gravity.
The warrior in the foreground is the heart of this piece. I painted his bronzed, muscular back as a monument to the strength and discipline required to carry our history forward. His vibrant Okpu Agu and ceremonial plumage are not just decorations; they signify his readiness and his status within the community. In his hand, he carries a rooster—a potent, symbolic tether that grounds the fluid, rhythmic pace of the dance in the deep roots of the Iri Agha tradition.
Behind him, the companion dancers mirror this fierce energy, their expressions reflecting a shared spirit that has survived through generations.
By setting this performance on a common community road, I sought to highlight how our identity is never left behind. It is a visual challenge to the viewer to consider what it truly means to inherit and embody the spirit of a warrior today.
This masterpiece is my celebration of that honour and the magnificent, primal energy that continues to define who we are.
