In Interphase, I present a rhythmic, cubist-inspired exploration of the threshold between being and becoming. This 3x3 foot canvas is a controlled explosion of bold geometric shapes and sweeping organic curves, rendered in a primary-heavy palette of reds, blues, and yellows contrasted by deep blacks and earthy tones. By interweaving overlapping profiles and shared features, the work captures a moment of intense interaction where boundaries dissolve and new forms emerge. It serves as a sophisticated visual metaphor for the transitional stages of growth and the complex dance of change.
My motivation for painting Interphase was to give visual form to the invisible tension of transition—that profound state of "in-between" where one phase of life ends and another begins. I have always been fascinated by the moment of contact, the precise point where disparate elements meet, influence one another, and ultimately transform. On this 3x3 foot canvas, I wanted to map the energy of these evolving relationships, showing that growth is rarely a linear path, but rather a vibrant tapestry of collisions and mergers.
In the composition, I deliberately combined rigid geometric lines with fluid organic curves to represent the interplay between the structures we build and the natural flow of existence.
The use of bold blacks, whites, and primary colours creates a sense of constant movement; it is a "visual heartbeat" of a soul in flux. I chose to overlap the faces and eyes to illustrate the dissolving of boundaries—suggesting that we are constantly being reshaped by our interactions with the world around us.
Ultimately, Interphase is a meditation on the essential stages of human development. It is my attempt to capture the chaotic beauty of emergence. I painted this masterpiece to encourage viewers to embrace the discomfort of change and to see the fascination within the "dance". It is a reminder that even in the midst of collision, there is a masterful order being formed, and that our most profound growth occurs when we allow the old to merge with the new.
