In Pebbles, I present a rhythmic meditation on the structural integrity of the natural world and the human spirit. This 36x36 inch canvas juxtaposes the ethereal, fluid motion of a cascading waterfall against the rugged, unyielding geometry of the stones below. Through a tactile application of acrylics, I shift the focus from the transient beauty of flowing water to the enduring significance of the riverbed. The work serves as a visual metaphor for the foundational struggles and stony paths that define the landscapes of our lives.
My motivation for painting Pebbles was to explore the hidden foundations of our existence—the silent, unmoving elements that support the grand "flow" of our lives. We are often captivated by the waterfall, the spectacle of movement, and the rush of progress, yet we rarely pause to appreciate the stones that hold the riverbanks together. I wanted to create a work that honours these unseen foundations and the necessary struggles they represent.
On this square canvas, I sought to capture the tension between the fluid and the fixed. To me, these pebbles are symbols of the arduous paths we must all walk. There are experiences in our history that may feel abrasive, accidental, or even abusive, yet they are the very components that complete our story. I chose to render the rocks with high texture and weight to emphasize their permanence; unlike the water that passes through, the stones remain, bearing the marks of the journey.
I am moved by the way pebbles rearrange the landscape as they travel, just as our endurance reshapes our internal world. I painted this masterpiece to remind us that our history—no matter how stony or difficult—is what ultimately beautifies the journey. It is a tribute to the resilience of the soul and a reminder that we are not defined by the ease of the current, but by the strength of the foundation we build along the way.
