Meet Didi, a 30 by 20 inch Acrylic painting on Canvas. This piece is a close-up look at the tension and texture of a "didi" hair session. I used acrylics to really lean into the contrast—the deep, rich blacks of the hair against a bold, unapologetic yellow. You can see the pull of the scalp and the way the light catches the sheen of the fresh braids. I wanted to capture that specific moment of transition: where loose hair meets the structured, neat lines of a cornrow. It’s a study of hands in motion and the quiet, steady rhythm that happens when a stylist is truly in their zone.
I’ve wanted to get a braiding session onto canvas for a long time. In Nigeria, "didi" isn’t just about looking good; it’s a whole vibe. It’s the sound of people talking, the patience of sitting in a chair for hours, and that shared connection between the person braiding and the person getting braided. It’s a communal ritual we’ve passed down for forever.
When I picked up my brushes for this, I wanted to treat hairstyling as the fine art it actually is. We see cornrows every day, but we don’t always stop to look at the geometry and the insane level of skill it takes to get those lines that perfect. I spent a lot of time on the hands because they do the heavy lifting—they’re the tools of a sculptor, just working with hair instead of clay.
The title and the theme also hit close to home for me. While the world is finally starting to recognize Nigerian braiding for the artistry it is, on a personal note, I also call my wife "Didi." So, every stroke of hair I painted felt like a tribute to the women in my life and the culture that raised me. This wasn't just a project; it was a journey I took with my brushes to document a "masterpiece of a lifetime"—the beauty of our traditions and the incredible patience of the people who keep them alive.
