About the Artist
Full name: Abibat Opeyemi Mulero
Abibat Mulero, known as Abieber, is a visual artist and videographer based in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. Her artistic practice primarily employs charcoal, ink, and acrylic to create portraiture that merges realistic figures with hand-drawn motifs and symbols.…
Abieber's signature style emerged after a pivotal moment in her career. Initially driven by the joy of creation, she found her work lacking depth until she began using it as a medium for storytelling. This transformation infused her art with purpose and meaning. Much of her imagery draws on her relationship with God, portraying quiet, devotional moments of prayer and rest rendered through detailed backgrounds inspired by African patterning and symbolism.
As a self-taught artist, Abieber has exhibited her work locally, including shows at her university and within her home state. These exhibitions have provided her with valuable opportunities to engage directly with viewers, fostering meaningful conversations about her art. She continues to evolve her body of work, firmly believing in the power of art to inspire change and shift perspectives.
Artist statement: My work begins with a face, a portrait rendered in charcoal or acrylic and expands outward into a world of motifs. These symbols are instinctive, they fill the space around my subjects like a second language, one that speaks alongside the figure.
